Pursuit of Equality is one of those extraordinary projects that not only documents a unique moment in history, but also provides great insight into what is our nation's next great Civil Rights issue.
On May 15th, 2008, the California State Supreme Court ruled in a historic 4-3 decision, that gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry in California. But the fight is still not over.
Proposition 8 will appear on the November 2008 ballot in California . It is variously known as the Protect Marriage Act, the Same-Sex Marriage Ban or the Marriage Discrimination Act. If it passes, it will add a new constitutional amendment to the California Constitution that "provide[s] that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
The release of this film has the potential to make a crucial impact in achieving timely public awareness on what is undoubtedly this country's next great civil rights debate. This is why we have begun having “awareness” screenings across the country.
Educating people on this issue is vital, and now, more than ever, is the time to share Pursuit of Equality with all of our friends, family, colleagues, and fellow all Californians.
